Hailing from sunny Canberra, Hoddle are a five-piece contemporary trad band. With their album doing well, this year will see the band touting their musical accouterments to festivals and venues across Australia, and writing and preparing new songs and tunes for their next CD. Fiddle, flute, whistle, bodhran, bass and guitar combine with stunning vocals at the juncture of older traditions and new compositions, with an emphasis on arrangements and an ear for detail. The album “Apples in Winter” finds continuity in tales of triumph, stories of love present and past despite ships wrecked and oceans divided. Tunes run as a steady current beneath each track, solid in tone and timbre, and tight as a drum. One of the underlying strengths of this band is the ability to re-present older tunes and songs with a freshness that makes the music feel brand new. The music of Hoddle is imbued with a warmth and lightness that comes from a true love of the folk tradition.
